Pre-Admission Testing

The Pre-admission Testing assesses, evaluates, educates and prepares patients and families for a successful and secure hospital experience.

During the pre-admission process, a team of nurses, anesthesiologists and other clinicians work together to collect information about your medical and surgical history and provide instructions to prepare you for an upcoming surgery.

Preparing for Your Visit

Please bring the following to your appointment:

  • Your complete medical and surgical history
  • A list of all medications, including prescription and over-the-counter medications, including dosage information
  • A list of any allergies to medicines, food, latex, dust, pollen or other sources
  • The names and telephone numbers of your primary care physician and any specialists you are seeing

During Your Visit

Please discuss any specific instructions with your physician about your pre-admission/preoperative visit. During your visit, you will:

  • Complete forms about your health
  • Be weighed and have your height measured
  • Complete any tests requested by your doctor. These vary depending on your health and type of surgery, but can include vital signs, blood tests, urine tests and/or an EKG

A nurse will also complete a nursing assessment and will provide pre- and postoperative information about your surgery. An anesthesiologist and/or nurse practitioner will review your medical and surgical history and might perform a brief physical examination and discuss your anesthetic plan. You might also be seen by other medical specialists who will work together to prepare you for a safe surgical procedure.

Please note: This appointment can take up to 2 to 3 hours. Although we try to be as efficient as possible, sometimes a wait is unavoidable.

Day of Surgery

On the day you are scheduled to have surgery:

  • Do not eat or drink anything after 10 pm the night before surgery unless you were instructed to do so by your physician or during your preoperative visit. If you have been instructed to take any medication, take it with a small sip of water
  • Bring your medications to the hospital if you were told to bring them with you
  • Wear loose, comfortable clothing
  • Bring your eyeglasses. You will not be able to wear contact lenses
  • Bring any dentures, hearing aids and cases in which to store them
  • Do not wear hair spray, body lotion or perfume
  • Do not wear any jewelry (including wedding rings, earrings and piercings), makeup or nail polish
  • Leave all valuables at home

For any additional questions regarding your surgery please contact your surgeon's office.
